SK Fun in the Snow

Another sunny warm day to play in the snow.  There was a lot of collaborative building going on in SK.  Some of the things they created were snowmen, big and small, snow caterpillars and the 'Leaning Tower of Pizza'.  Others built the biggest snowball they could and then proceeded to vault over it.  Fun, fun, fun.

Snow Much Fun

The weather today was glorious and perfect for fun outside. The JK's quickly figured out that the snow was sticky and perfect for snowmen.  Actually, rather than making a snowman most of the students tried to see how big they could make their own snowball.  They rolled them up and down the hill until they were to big and heavy and they couldn't move them anymore.  Near the end of our time outside, Emma and Harmony collaborated and made a BIG snowman together.

Some students made snow angels and looked for tracks in the snow.  Others watched how the snow melted on the rock.  Marie found one that looked like a heart and wondered if her sister had left it for her from recess.

I tried to take pictures of the action with my phone but it was so bright it was hard to tell what I was able to record. Lacey asked me to "Take a cheese of her and her snowball." They all love to ham it up for the camera :)   It was a great day to be outside enjoying the beautiful winter weather.

Student Led Conferences

We had student led conferences tonight throughout the school.  In the Kindergarten class, students showed families their portfolios, which were a collection of photographs, art work, learning stories, math samples and writing.  They showed their families how they could make patterns and print their names.  They looked at their journals and read their favourite poems and Guided Reading books. Students took out their iPads and showed their parents their favourite apps as well.  We also had our class blog up and running on the smartboard so they could show that too.

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend.  If you couldn't make it tonight, please let me know if you would like to come in another time to look through your child's work with them.

Projector Snow

We have been studying snow and ice in our inquiry over the last few weeks.  I came across a link to this video in a blog I follow called Transforming Our Learning Environment Into a Space of Possibilities and looked forward to showing the class.

It is called Projector Snow by Brian Maffitt.  He created this video on February 9th, 2013 during a blizzard in New York City.  He pointed a video projector out of his window and projected a movie onto the snow.  He said these are the results in motion.

We watched the video a couple of times and we were all mesmerized by the colours.  I asked the children what they thought of the video and what it made them think of while they watched it.  Here are a few of their comments:

Looks like fireworks - Julian
Looks like it is raining candy - Griffin
It looks like a blue bird flying - Cooper
The red looks like a glowing case for the snow - Evan
It looks like candy the way it sticks together - Gage
I could see a mouth and a face when it swirled together - Tyler
The snow glowed because it was in the dark - Zach

Check it out and enjoy.

Valentine's Day Celebrations

Here is a look at the fun and games that we had at our Valentine's Day parties in JK and SK.  We made and decorated bags and exchanged Valentines.

We decorated cupcakes, ate cookies, fruit and other treats.

We played the Heartbreaker Game.  Students had to pass a tissue paper heart around the table using a clothespin without tearing the heart.

We played a game called Heart Race.  Students used two large hearts to move around the room and race down the hall without losing their footing.

More party fun playing a game with smarties.  Students had to suck up smarties and move them to their cup.  Then they got to eat them. Thank you for all the treats and for the family members who joined us for all the fun.

Celebrating 100 Day

Today the SK's celebrated 100 days of school.  We did different activities throughout the day to celebrate the number 100.  I told them that one of the things that we would do today would be to read 100 books.  They were a bit skeptical at first, wondering if we would take a break for lunch or not :)The SK's discovered that it isn't really that hard to get to 100 if everyone reads 4-5 books each over the course of the day.

We made a mural of 100 animals that we cut out and glued on a BIG piece of paper.  We played 100 board game race where they rolled the dice and then bingo dabbed their way to 100.

We counted 100 pieces of lego and then created something with those pieces.  We painted a picture using q-tips and paint and counted by 10's to 100.

More Ice Cream Making Pictures...in JK

We made ice cream in JK too this week.  It was cold work and we needed our mittens but the results were worth it.   You can find the recipe and more pictures in the previous blog entry.
