Celebrating 100 Day

Today the SK's celebrated 100 days of school.  We did different activities throughout the day to celebrate the number 100.  I told them that one of the things that we would do today would be to read 100 books.  They were a bit skeptical at first, wondering if we would take a break for lunch or not :)The SK's discovered that it isn't really that hard to get to 100 if everyone reads 4-5 books each over the course of the day.

We made a mural of 100 animals that we cut out and glued on a BIG piece of paper.  We played 100 board game race where they rolled the dice and then bingo dabbed their way to 100.

We counted 100 pieces of lego and then created something with those pieces.  We painted a picture using q-tips and paint and counted by 10's to 100.

More Ice Cream Making Pictures...in JK

We made ice cream in JK too this week.  It was cold work and we needed our mittens but the results were worth it.   You can find the recipe and more pictures in the previous blog entry.

Ice Cream Making With Snow!

There has been lots of snow so we decided that we would put it to good use by making some ice cream this week.  Students measured the milk, sugar and vanilla and put it into a small ziploc bag.

They put the little ziploc in a larger ziploc and added some salt to the bag.

Next they had to go to the snow table and add a scoop of snow to the bag and seal it up.

After that, they returned to their table and shook it all up.  It took about 5 minutes and another scoop of snow before it was all done.

It was a cold job, so most of them went to put on mittens to keep their hands warm.  Some of them thought they needed their hats too.
Finally, everyone got to sample their experiment.  TASTY STUFF.  A big thank you to Mrs. Phinney for staying to help with this chilly experiment.

Here is the recipe for the ziploc ice cream if you want to try it at home.  I couldn't find the original source for the recipe. (I googled it years ago)

Ziploc Ice Cream
  • 1/2 cup milk (doesn't matter what kind, but I used Whole Milk)
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla or other flavor
      1.  Add ingredients to snack size ziploc bag and zip shut.
2. Place that bag in larger ziploc bag (sandwich size).
3. Add ice or snow to fill bag 1/2 way and 6 Tablespoons of salt (coarse salt works best).
4. Zip that one shut and shake, turn, toss, and mix the bag. In about 5-10 minutes you will have cold hands and yummy ice cream.

Do not double recipe!! Kids may want to use mittens to do this!

NOTE: You may need to put an additional large ziploc bag over the one containing the salt and ice since they tend to spring leaks once you get into the shaking it up.

Experimenting with Watercolours in JK

Due to the weather we had a small group on Thursday.  We decided it would be fun to experiment painting using watercolours.  The students learned how to hold the brush so they had control of it and how to make it dance on the paper and not scrub it too hard. We began with a small piece of watercolour paper that we soaked in water and blue watercolour paint.  They loved the wet-on-wet technique and how the paint spread and ran on the damp paper.

For fun, we decided to sprinkle the wet paper with salt and see what happened.

This is what we learned:

Harmony: Looks like water.
Payton:  We learned how to hold the brush so we don't get paint on our fingers.
Lauryn:  When we put salt on our paper it did weird things.
Emma:  I made a blue sky and grass.
Tye:  The paper had to be wet.
James:  I learned we hold the brush by pinching it.
Lexi:  I used a paint stick to put on blue paint.
Lacey:  Looks like clouds.

We Wonder About...snow and ice

It appears that winter is really settling in.  We have decided to take advantage of the ice and snow to ask some questions and do some experiments with snow.  We have been bringing in snow each day to experiment with and watch what happens to it as the day progresses.  It's cold work and so the children need to wear their mittens while they are at the snow table.

Some of the questions we presently have on our "Wonder" board are:

"How come snow melts when you pour water on it?"- Evan
"Why is ice slippery?" - Griffin
"Why does the snow melt when the sun comes out?" - Cooper

"Why does ice melt?" - Julian
"Why does ice melt when snow and rain turn it to mush?"- Evey

Stay tuned to see what we discover.
